Charlton Kenneth Jeffrey Howard , professionally known as the Kid Laroi , is an Australian singer, rapper, songwriter and record producer. Born in Sydney, he originally gained recognition from his association and friendship with late rapper Juice Wrld, who mentored him while he was on tour in Australia. Laroi gained a local following before signing to Lil Bibby's Grade A Productions. He became known outside Australia with his song "Let Her Go", and gained further popularity with his song "Go" featuring Juice Wrld, which peaked at number 52 on the Billboard Hot 100. His debut mixtape F*ck Love peaked at number one on the Australian ARIA Charts, making him the youngest Australian solo artist ever to reach the top. It also reached number three on the US Billboard 200.
Early life
Charlton Kenneth Jeffery Howard was born on 17 August 2003 in Waterloo, a suburb near Redfern in the inner south of Sydney. His parents are Nick Howard, a music producer and sound engineer who worked with local artists, and Cody Phillips, a model manager and music executive. Howard's great-great grandfather was a part of the Stolen Generation; he was taken from his family, placed into a white family and was told he was Spanish because of his darker complexion. He later found out that he was Aboriginal when he was 18. He is Kamilaroi from which he derived his artist name "Laroi".
Howard attended the highly selective, prestigious private school Australian Performing Arts Grammar School. He spent much of his childhood relocating around New South Wales. He moved to Broken Hill, a remote outback city, at the age of seven, living with his mother and uncle at the time. When he was 11, Howard's uncle was murdered, and his mother moved back to Waterloo. Howard began to take music more seriously and started rapping around the age of 13, citing that music was a method of escaping from his family struggles. From a young age, his mother would play him music by the Fugees, Erykah Badu and Tupac.
