Jan Blohm Wiki
Jan writes poems since he can remember. Although his great influence is English music, Afrikaans is his first choice. Afrikaans is sacred to him and he loves poetry very much and tries to give the poetic characteristic to his music. He has always been attracted to the music of Chuck Berry and the old rock 'n' roll pioneers. He never went to B.B. King and Muddy Waters listened to Rodriguez and Bob Dylan later. Nowadays he likes to listen to Ben Harper, Stevie Ray Vaughn and ZZ Top. Locally, the CDs of Anton Goosen, Piet Botha and Gian Groen are never far away. After school Jan bought him a pawnshop special acoustic. With his sheer hatred of conformity discovered and the roots of rock 'n roll and blues started to explore. The Air Force was something to do after school, where he joined Electronic Communications and there he made time to learn guitar himself. Five years in the Air Force was enough of conformity and started a career in Information Technology. In 2002 his music started to get subtracted and he became a full time singer / musician. Two of his songs are on Volk Jou! recorded at Wildebeest Records and during that time he also began to master the world of sound engineering. Jan Blohm's debut album, Melkstraat Confessions, was released in 2004. This album stole the spotlight with the 2005 GMT Awards when it walked away in the face of strong competition with three of the major awards. The GMT was a SABC 2 initiative and is considered to be the most important ceremony in the Afrikaans music industry. 'Album of the Year' was awarded this debut and Breyten's Letter was named "Song of the Year". Furthermore, Jan was named 'Best Newcomer' of the same year. Jan Blohm has been blessed with many talents and in 2005 the well-known South African TV director, Frans Marx, approached Jan to play the lead role in an Afrikaans drama series for KykNet, "That which is dumb". Jan also writes the lyrics and composes the title music, "Dromer", for the series. In October 2005 Jan received the Huisgenoot Tempo Award for “The Best Rock Group”. Jan's second album, 'A Silent Runaway', was recorded in January 2006 and all the songs were written and composed by Jan himself. "Dreamer" the title music for the drama series "That which is dumb" is also heard on this album. 'A Silent Runaway' offers a variety of music styles ranging from rock to blues, from ballads to light jazz. A surprise on the album is that Jan can even play piano that can be heard in two of the songs: "Yes Mom" and "This Morning Van Gogh". The music video of the song "In wish" was recorded during the recording of this album in Clarens in the Free State. Jan's third CD entitled "Green Sweater" was released with a great cheer at the Performer Theater in Pretoria in November 2006. The CD contains (of course) his eponymous hit that became familiar with the famous TV series 'Orion' and a few songs that regular guests will already recognize at his live performances. A new rock version of "Sunday Lover" makes its appearance and after years of waiting "Johnny K", Jan's tribute to Johannes Kerkorrel, Jimi Hendrix and other music masters, was finally recorded. Jan received two Huisgenoot Tempo Awards in 2007 despite strong competition, namely Favorite Rock Album for Green Sweater and once again for Favorite Rock Group. November 2007, Jan's DVD, 'Live at the Performer' appears. The recording was made at the launch of 'Green Sweater' at the Performer Theater. Jan also had a successful trip to London in 2008 where he performed in the Aardvark! And then of course in Beijing, China. Jan was the first South African artist to perform in China and not only fed South Africans' souls, but also Chinese, Canadians and the Ambassador of South Africa! The event took place with the opening of the South African restaurant, Pinotage. It was also the final event of the celebrations that took place where the SA Embassy, together with the SA Business, held several events in celebration of the 10 year anniversary of diplomatic ties between South Africa and China, which coincided with SA National Freedom Day celebrations . He was awarded the 14th annual SAMA awards evening with an award in the category 'Best Afrikaans DVD of the Year'. The event was held at Sun City on May 2 and 3. Unfortunately, Jan was not there to receive the award himself, due to his performances in Beijing. In May 2009, Jan released his album 7 Years which was received with great praise and appreciation in the public as well as in the media and in the music industry. Jan is honored in the same year with a Report VAMT (Vonk Afrikaans Music Award) for 7 Years as the Best Rock Album of the Year. Jan also received a SAMA award for 2010 for Most Popular African Rock Album; as well as two Huisgenoot Tempo Awards for Popular Rock Album and Alternative Music Video of the Year
