Rag'n'Bone Man experienced a stormy breakthrough in 2015 with the success of his song Human and the accompanying debut album. The singer became a father, got married, got divorced and made a new record in Nashville. In conversation with NU.nl, he says he is happy that his son will one day hear how his father has felt.

On Life By Misadventure , Rag'n'Bone Man's second album, the British artist starts with the songs Fireflies and Breath In Me , both of which are addressed to his four-year-old son Reuben. When asked whether fatherhood has changed him as an artist, he answers in the affirmative. "As a person I have become more open and less cautious", says the artist who is actually called Rory Graham.

The fact that Reuben gets such a central role on the album is also because the singer had to miss him during the writing sessions and recordings. “I was in Nashville a few times for three weeks and then I couldn't see him. I thought about him a lot and was inspired by it. Two of the people I wrote with had also just become parents, so they got exactly what I was trying to say."

"I really wanted to talk to him and he won't understand that yet, because he is only four, but one day he will listen and know how I felt."

Singer moved to Nashville because inspiration dried up

When Rag'n'Bone Man started writing again after the success of his debut, he felt the pressure to deliver a suitable successor. "When I played a few songs to the record company, they gave me their support and told me to make something that I would be proud of. They didn't want to pressure me to do something I don't want to make. and let me do my thing. After that I was able to let the pressure slide and I have never had so much fun in the studio. "

The singer initially wrote mainly in his home studio, but after a while the inspiration dried up and so he decided to travel to Nashville to work with songwriters such as Natalie Hemby and Mike Reid. "There were things I really wanted to say and they helped me get that out."

Only six days to make recordings due to the corona crisis

Rag'n'Bone Man describes himself as a normally withdrawn person, but in the studio had no trouble opening up to the songwriters he had just met. "I actually immediately became friends with the people I worked with there. They are not just colleagues, but almost family. They really made me feel like I could be honest and say anything. It was actually very easy and natural."

Just as three weeks of admissions were scheduled in Nashville, the corona pandemic came into play. "Because of self-isolation there were only six days left. That was a bit stressful, but the pressure it brought was good. Because of this we really played the record live as a band and that actually made the songs sound better. "

The inconvenience of fame

The album also features a duet with Pink. The singer describes his colleague's voice as "magical" and says that since their first meeting in 2017, there has been talk of a collaboration.

“The song Anywhere Away From Here was already part of the album, but it seemed like the perfect song to record as a duet. I am very grateful for the fact that she was so enthusiastic and immediately recorded her part. I keep squeezing my arm every now and then because an artist like Pink wants to work with me. "

'I was not at all prepared for my fame'

Rag'n'Bone Man wrote the lyrics to Anywhere Away From Here about the great difficulty he had with his fame. "I was totally unprepared for it. Everyone suddenly knew who I was and I found it uncomfortable to be in rooms full of people who wanted my attention. It felt unnatural to have a picture with a hundred people. Of course it is a compliment, but sometimes I just wanted to be saved by a friend and go to the pub. "

When asked if he has now found a way to deal with it, he answers firmly, "I've gotten better at saying no. Rather, I felt an obligation to do what people wanted me to do. Now I have my mental health is no longer a thing of the past. I now know that in terms of work, things can sometimes get crazy, so I have to separate that world from my private life. "
