Nicki Minaj, the renowned rapper, has found herself at the center of a plagiarism scandal. According to a recent lawsuit, the 40-year-old artist intentionally stole the rhythm for her song "I Lied" from another artist. The individual who filed the lawsuit not only accused Minaj but also the well-known producer, Mike Will Made It. However, sources familiar with the matter have come forward to defend Minaj, stating that she should not be held responsible for the accusations. These sources claim that Minaj was not involved in selecting the rhythms in question. Julius Johnson, the artist who filed the lawsuit, argues that the music underlying Minaj's vocals in the song is nearly an exact copy of a composition he created long before the release of Minaj's album, "The Pinkprint," in late 2014. It is worth noting that Johnson appears to be unaware of Minaj's role as a lyricist. The sources defending Minaj emphasize that any claims related to production should be addressed by the appropriate parties. This suggests that Mike Will Made It, as the person who introduced the rhythm to Minaj, would be the one facing legal consequences. Johnson alleges that the rhythm was stolen from a song he had published on YouTube in September 2011, titled "onmysleeve." In his lawsuit, Johnson explains that he had the rhythm saved on a hard drive during his time at the Atlanta Institute of Art. However, in 2013, the hard drive was stolen from him during a session at a music studio. Johnson further speculates that some of the associates of both Minaj and Mike Will Made It were present at the Institute during that time, implying that his hard drive might have ended up in their possession. Finally, Johnson claims that he did not hear Minaj's song until 2022, at which point he immediately recognized the similarities. He argues that, aside from the rapper's lyrics, both songs share the same instrumentation and rhythm.
