Colombian singer Shakira will be honored as 'Woman of the Year' by Billboard during the first Women in Latin Music event on May 6 in Miami. The event aims to celebrate Latin female artists, executives, and creatives who work proactively for positive chan

The two-hour musical program, hosted by Ivy Queen and Jacqueline Bracamontes, will be exclusively broadcast by Telemundo on May 7. Leila Cobo, Billboard's content director for Latin/Español, and also of Colombian origin, said, "Shakira is the ultimate woman in music. Thanks to her, Latin women around the world have been empowered to write and perform deeply personal music." Shakira will be honored for her "extraordinary" achievements in music, such as becoming the first woman to reach the Top 10 on the Billboard chart with Shakira: BZRP Music Sessions #53. The track, produced by Argentine Bizarrap, also made history as the most-streamed Latin song in 24 hours on Spotify and the most-viewed Latin song on YouTube in 24 hours, with over 63 million views, breaking 14 Guinness World Records. The Colombian singer, who has personally gone through a turbulent period due to her separation from Spanish footballer Gerard Piqué and her move to Miami from Barcelona with her two children, has sold over 95 million records worldwide, making her the best-selling Latin female artist of all time. Her global success as a crossover artist (also entering the English market) opened the doors for other Latin artists to enter international markets. Aside from her stellar industry accolades, at the age of 18, Shakira created the Pies Descalzos Foundation, which has built and adapted nine public schools in Cartagena, Barranquilla, Guajira, and Quibdó, with six under construction. The foundation has raised over $40 million since its inception and has impacted more than 150,000 children and almost 900,000 families. The inaugural Women in Latin Music event was announced earlier this year as an expansion of Billboard's Women in Music franchise. Shakira will join the previously announced lineup of powerful women shaping the music industry. Honorees include Mexican Ana Gabriel, who will receive the Living Legend Award; Argentine Emilia, who will receive the Rising Star Award; Evaluna, who will receive the Tradition and Future Award; Colombian Goyo, who will receive the Agent of Change Award, and Mexican Thalía, who will receive the Global Powerhouse Award.
